A deep-rooted problem's surface: High-profile Arab women

When a place as sophisticated and advanced as Dubai is the face of the Middle East, it's hard to imagine that Arabs would have such an outdated way of living their personal domestic life, much less an outdated judicial system.
As true as it is, the Arab world is moving forward, but at a slower pace than the world around it - men still believe women are their property, and they treat women as such, that is what this news blog implies.
It is no secret that Arab women suffer from domestic abuse, that not all come from liberal, open-minded families, however the percentage of women suffering seems to be decreasing as the governments of various middle eastern countries continue to progress on giving women more protection, security, and most importantly, freedom.
However, poorer countries such as Jordan and Iraq do not seem to be progressing as well as the richer countries such as Qatar and Oman, but portraying the Arab women as a whole to be weak and victims is truly wrong.

''It is a chronic pattern of the Arab world to imprison or harm influential women who are positioned and working towards changing the status quo''.

A high-profile Arab woman was killed in broad daylight in Iraq for being rebellious in what she wore, and the way she lived her life, while another was shot on her way to her car and two more died mysteriously. All these women were living the way they wanted and to and raised awareness for women empowerment. Two sisters were found dead at a construction site in Jordan, their death was under mysterious circumstances and the case was dismissed. If such a thing happened in a wealthier, more established Arab country, it would not have been taken lightly and the issues would have been dealt with until they are resolved. High profile women are praised in countries like Kuwait, and for one to be assassinated in public would've caused a huge uproar.

Honor killings should also be considered a murder instead of an excuse to be praised. We see a lot of men using this as an excuse to escape the punishment intended for their crime of murdering a female family member. Despite it being mentioned in the religion of Islam, it is not being done according to the Islamic law but to the linking of the men, and in some countries, this has been made illegal and the convicted will receive a punishment according to their crime.

The author of this article has done a very good job in raising awareness, however they should've made a clear distinction that not all Arab countries act the same.
