Italian journalist admits her image of Saudi women was wrong

Although this news article may make you think about the correlation of how the media actually depicts Arab women in the western media, and it definitely serves as an example of how wrong our image is being portrayed. We read what journalists are reporting to us, and we absorb their perspective on different cultures, people, political affairs, etc., so what happens when journalists are being ''biased'' or just put out news, or even blogs, while being under the wrong impression, weather they may be misinformed or just simply ignorant? Do people realize they are being affected by someone's inaccurate opinion?

“I had been given the wrong image of Arab women, which had been portrayed by the media – it was the wrong concept and a misrepresentation, especially in Saudi Arabia,” she explained.

Having said that, an Italian journalist and senate candidate only needed one car ride in Saudi Arabia to realize how wrong her image was of the local women – which she claims to have been fed to her by the media. Seeing the way people live without having a third party influence the way you look at people and their cultures, and that’s exactly what happened to Allegra Salvadori. She admitted that only a day was enough to make hear realize that the media fed her a false representation and that every country has its own ways of dealing with the gender inequality they face as well as its intensity.

If journalists themselves can be led astray what does that say about the general public who don’t even come near to gaining access to as much information as journalists do? I guess the best thing one can do is to search for more than one source, research for facts, maybe a confirmation of some sort. The world is changing, the middle east is changing, and the way women are treated is also changing, informing people about it would save everyone a lot of misinterpretation
